Sanitary Sewer Overflow Press Release Sunday, August 9, 2020
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
House Bill 1160, which the General Assembly enacted in July 1999, requires those municipalities, animal operations, industries and others who operate waste handling systems issue news releases when a waste spill of 1,000 gallons or more reaches surface waters.
In accordance with that regulation, the following news release has been prepared and issued to the media in Wayne County, NC.
The Town of Mount Olive had a discharge of untreated sewer from inside the Town’s wastewater treatment plant at 408 Wilkins Farm Road. The spill was discovered on Sunday, August 9, 2020 at 5:00 A.M. and had spilled a total of 135,000 gallons as of 11AM on Sunday, August 9, 2020. The spill is still ongoing at this time.
The untreated waste entered the headwaters of the North East Cape Fear River. The spill occurred as a result of a torrential rainfall within an eight hour period due to severe storms in our area.
This notice was required by North Carolina General Statutes Article 21 Chapter 143.215C. For more information contact Interim Town Manager and Jammie Royall at (919) 658-9539.
